Paracord Buddies

🧍♂️ How to Make a Paracord Buddy Keychain

Fun, fast, and ideal for beginners!

These little legends make great zipper pulls, keyrings, or bag tags — and they’re an easy way to get started with paracord knots. Once you’ve made one, you’ll want to make a whole crew.

🧰 What You’ll Need:

  • Paracord (550 Type III) – about 1 metre per buddy

  • Keyring, trigger hook, or split ring

  • Wooden bead or pony bead (10–12mm hole size)

  • Scissors + lighter (for trimming & sealing ends)

  • Ruler or tape measure

Step 1: Start the Loop + Head

  • Fold your leg cord (e.g., neon pink) in half.

  • Thread the folded end through your keyring and pull the loose ends through the loop to make a cow hitch knot.

  • Slide both loose ends through a wooden bead to form the head.

  • Tie a simple knot in each leg to create little feet.

Step 2: Begin the Body (Add Arms Cord)

  • Take a second cord (e.g., rainbow) for the arms/body.

  • Find the centre of this cord and place it behind the legs, just under the bead.

  • Tie one overhand knot (like the first part of tying a shoelace) around the leg cords.

Step 3: Start the Body Wrap (Cobra Knot)

  • Begin tying cobra knots down the pink leg cords.

  • To do this: cross the left arm cord over the middle (legs), bring the right cord over it, behind the legs, and out through the loop on the left.

  • Pull tight and alternate sides with each knot.

Step 4: Continue Wrapping

  • Repeat cobra knots 3–4 more times to build the body section.

  • Keep the knots snug and centred. This will form the torso of your paracord person.

Step 5: Finish the Body and Arms

  • Stop tying once the body is the length you like.

  • Leave the rainbow cord ends sticking out to form the arms.

  • Tie a small knot at the end of each arm so they don’t fray and look like little hands.

Step 6: Add the Face + Trim

  • Use a black marker to draw a smiley face or whatever expression you like on the bead.

  • Carefully trim and melt any loose ends with a lighter (adult supervision recommended).

  • Done! You’ve made a colourful paracord buddy ready to hang on your keys, backpack, or gift to a mate 🎉
